Values-Driven Evidence-Based Practice in Adult/Older Adult Services

CIMH has developed an initiative for improving the quality of mental health care in California’s public mental health system by assisting local mental health systems and the State Department of Mental Health to disseminate and adopt/adapt science-based practices, and build consensus for a shared stakeholder vision of evidence-based practices in California. The CIMH initiative recognizes that science is not the only determinant of the worth of a mental health practice, and maintains that evidence-based practices are relevant only when various levels of scientific evidence and stakeholder values are factored together. The strategic initiative is called "Toward Effective Mental Health Practices: A Strategic Work Plan to Develop Organizational Capacity for Incorporating Values and Science into Mental Health Practices, November 2003."

The California Institute for Mental Health has an established multi-stakeholder, Values-Driven Evidence Based Practices Advisory Committee, whose roles and responsibilities are to participate on monthly conference calls in order to achieve the goals which are listed below:

  • To advocate and educate in order to ensure the implementation of values-driven EBP in California
  • To advise, inform, and assist in the development of CIMH values-driven EBP projects, conferences, and trainings
  • To review and comment on CIMH values-driven EBP policy papers
  • To market and promote values-driven EBP in other non-CIMH venues
  • To promote values-driven EBP through participation in statewide and local initiatives

The membership of the advisory committee includes representatives from:

  • Department of Mental Health
  • California Mental Health Planning Council
  • Coalition of Community Mental Health Agencies
  • California Network of Mental Health Clients
  • NAMI CA
  • United Advocates for California Children
  • California Alliance of Child and Family Services
  • California Association of Social Rehabilitation Agencies
